Parkinson’s Disease
Staying active and exercising daily is critical in managing and slowing the progression of Parkinson’s.
Parkinson’s is characterised by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, particularly in the substantia nigra region. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in facilitating smooth, coordinated movements. As dopamine levels decline, individuals with PD experience a range of motor symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowed movement), and postural instability.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, causing symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowed movement), and postural instability. People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in facilitating smooth, coordinated movements. As dopamine levels decline, individuals with Parkinson’s experience a range of motor symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowed movement), and postural instability.
Medication is the main way to manage Parkinson’s but staying active and exercising daily is also critical in managing the disease and slowing its progression.
At Neurobility our expert physiotherapy is tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual with Parkinson’s. Everything we do is geared towards maximising fitness and reducing the impact of Parkinson’s on the person. We know that exercise is one of the biggest factors in managing Parkinson’s and that emerging evidence suggests that exercise may have neuroprotective effects, potentially slowing down the progression of the disease.
We work with our clients to give them individually tailored exercise programmes to focus on the aspects that are impacted by Parkinson’s. We offer regular reviews to make sure the condition is managed proactively. We can support with hands on physiotherapy as well as one to one or group exercise sessions. This is all supplemented by the technology we have available in the clinic such as the LiteGait, MMGO and Gripable.
We help people with Parkinson’s to
- Improve walking ability
- Improve muscle strength
- Improve fitness
- Reduce muscle stiffness or rigidity
- Improve balance and co-ordination
- Learn techniques to manage “freezing”
- Learn techniques to keep movements “big” to limit bradykinesia.
- Reduce pain
- Learn about their condition with education and general support
